Sue Shore came to New Zealand in 1999 as a technology teacher. She attended Manchester Metropolitan University in England and achieved a B Ed (Hons) Degree in Design and Technology.
Sue learned to make silver jewellery in 2003 and discovered that making silver jewellery was an enchanting way of expressing her love of life in New Zealand. Sue's jewellery has been available at design stores and galleries throughout New Zealand since 2006. Sue continues to capture the natural movements of our amazing surroundings in her jewellery, aiming to transform her view of the beauty of New Zealand's native birds and plants into pieces of body adornment. Sue makes all of her jewellery by hand. She creates every piece individually from sheets of sterling silver. |

The Story
In 2010 Sue Shore and Jill Alexander met through their mutual friend Winnie Duggan – who thought they’d be good for each other and their art. Jill had previously undertaken a jewellery workshop with Sue and found her an inspirational tutor and a talented artist. Sue’s NZ flora and fauna jewellery is found in art galleries around New Zealand and as a testament to her exceptional artistry, without any advertising – she has been approached by many galleries to stock her work. Jill’s art has been brought to the fore with support of well-known Wellington artist Jeanne Macaskill. From first meeting Jeanne in the summer of 2012, Jeanne mentored Jill in finding her own artists voice. This was the catalyst to painting and exhibiting her work, rather than quietly popping it back in the cupboard. Later in 2013, Sue and Jill began discussing their art and began ideas for some of Sue’s contemporary jewellery range during a casual lunch in the sunshine in Ngaio. It was another conversation over lunch that Sue and Jill began discussing collaborating and exhibiting together. They planned a week long workshop in Sue’s beautiful Mt Bruce studio with the express purpose of working together on both their art forms. Two very different mediums came together at the workshop in October 2014 and this work formed their exhibition at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts a couple of months later in December 2014. At Sue’s Studio, their art styles combined and their joint pieces are really something special. Also their separate art works developed in the collaborative environment, with each artwork complementary in form. The People With a background as a technology teacher – Sue undertook a jewellery workshop which proved to be a pivotal point in her career and she has provided tutoring in jewellery alongside her own jewellery business since 2006. Working in Projects for her 9-5 job – Jill always had art on her agenda, however, with Jeanne’s mentoring; this upped the ante to making art which she felt was exhibition worthy. The excitement of working together provided a fantastic platform from which to launch their new art at the exhibition. |
